Kids Bible Lesson 21 - Elijah and The Widow

Welcome to week 21!

This week your children learn the Bible story of Elijah and the widow.

God told the prophet Elijah to travel a long distance to a town named Zarephath. In the

town, God told Elijah a widow would feed him during the long drought. Elijah knew God’s word would come true, but the widow was unsure about giving away her last meal. In this Bible lesson about Elijah and the widow, the children learn that God knows what you need and will take care of you. Have fun learning this story of faith!

The key concepts that we focused on this week are:

God will take care of you.
It takes great faith to trust God.
God wants you to share with other people.

You can also come up with your own key concepts.

Bible Verse for kids
The Bible verse for this lesson is 1 Kings 17:16 ICB

“The jar of flour and the jug of oil were never empty”.
This Bible verse should be simple enough for your toddler to memorize after a week of practice.

Bible Story Tips

We read “Elijah and the Widow” beginning on page 41 of the children's Bible Storybook called Bible-Time Stories and Rhymes.
During story, draw attention to the key concepts for this lesson.
Don't forget to ask questions related to the story, for example, “Did the widow’s flour and oil last throughout the drought?”
Throughout the Bible lesson we reiterated how it takes great faith to trust God.
After the Bible story and discussion session, we stand up and do the interactive rhyme found in the Bible storybook.

Prayer
After the story and rhyme, we say a prayer that is related to the Bible story. You can either have your children repeat after you or allow them to come up with their own prayer.

Bible Song about Elijah and The Widow

The Bible song for this week is "God Is So Good".
We cast the song from YouTube to the television, so our children can see the motions on the big screen.

Endless Jar bible activity

The widow thought she only had enough flour and oil to make one meal for her son and herself. Because she did what God asked and fed Elijah first, the little bit of oil and flour did not run out.

We used the Endless Jar Bible Activity to remind the girls that God will take care of us.

Jug of Oil Bible Craft

The widow thought she was going to have only one loaf of bread left for her family, but God sent Elijah. Because of her faith, God kept her family from running out of food during the drought.

We made a kids Elijah Bible Craft to be a reminder that it takes great faith to trust God.

This preschool craft can be made by cutting a jar shape out of card-stock paper. Then have the children decorate the jar. (We used the “Jug of Oil Bible Craft" found in the Bible Time Family Fun Pack.)

After the craft, I reminded the girls to be faithful and to trust in God.

T.R.U.S.T. Bible craft activity

It took great faith for the widow to trust God and share her last meal with Elijah. But because the widow trusted God and was obedient, she had many more meals to share.

- While the girls had fun working on the "T.R.U.S.T. Bible Craft Activity", they learned the trusting attributes of God.

Baking a Treat Bible activity

The widow only had enough ingredients for one loaf of bread. She had faith that if she shared the last of her food, God would bless her with more.

In this cooking Bible activity, we helped the girls make some brownies to share with their friends. While the brownies were baking in the oven, we talked about how it feels good to share with people.

I also reminded the girls that God wants us to share with others.

Five Loaves of Bread Bible Rhyme

God multiplied the food supply for the widow’s family and Elijah until the drought was over.

- The girls and I sang a fun Bible nursery rhyme called “Five Loaves of Bread".

After the rhyme, we reminded the girls that God God will take care of us in any situation.

What’s the Facts bible game

There was a drought and many people in the land had little or no food. The fact that the widow of the story was unselfish and shared with Elijah first, God blessed her and her family with enough food to last the duration of the drought.

We played a fun game called "What’s the Facts Bible Game", where the girls sorted through the facts of the Elijah Bible story.
