Week 16 - Gideon’s Army -
Bible Time FUN Through the Bible
Kids Bible Lesson 16 - Gideon’s Army

Gideon's Army

Welcome to week 16!

This week the children will learn about Gideon and his army of three hundred men.

God chose just an ordinary man named Gideon to lead the Israelite army to victory over the Midianites. God wanted Gideon to fight with a very small army, so the Israelite's would know that God, not they, had won the battle. Gideon trusted God and went to battle with only three hundred men. To Gideon and his army’s surprise, they had an astounding victory over their enemy!

This Bible story teaches children that God chooses ordinary people to do great things and that following God’s instructions is always best. When God is fighting on our side, we can be sure we will win.

Have fun learning about this adventurous story!

If you haven’t read the introduction to Bible Time yet, I recommend you read the outline about the Bible lessons for children first.

The key concepts that we focused on this week are:

  • We must fight on God’s side.

  • God uses ordinary people to do great things.

  • Following God’s instructions is the best thing to do.

You can also come up with your own key concepts.

Bible Verse for kids
The Bible verse for this lesson is Judges 7:9

“Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands”.
This Bible verse should be simple enough for your toddler to memorize after a week of practice.

Bible Story Tips

  • We read “Gideon’s  Army” beginning on page 31 of the children's Bible Storybook called Bible-Time Stories and Rhymes.

  • During story, draw attention to the key concepts for this lesson.

  • Don't forget to ask questions related to the story, for example, “How many men were left in Gideon’s army?”

  • The girls saw how God was able to use just an ordinary man to do something great.

  • After the Bible story and discussion session, we stand up and do the interactive rhyme found in the Bible storybook

Prayer
After the story and rhyme, we say a prayer that is related to the Bible story. You can either have your children repeat after you or allow them to come up with their own prayer.

Bible Song about Gideon’s Army

  • The Bible song for this week is "I’m in the Lord’s Army".

  • We cast the song from YouTube to the television, so our children can see the motions on the big screen.

bible Activities about Gideon’s Army

We did different Bible activities each day - related to Gideon’s Army. We also have a selection of free Bible activities about Gideon’s Army here.

The Bible Time Family Fun Pack includes all of the Bible activities printed for your convenience, learn more here. Some activities included:

Gideon’s Army bible coloring Page

While our daughters colored the Gideon’s Army Bible Coloring Page, we talked about how God helped the Israelites have a miraculous victory over the Midianites.

I’m in the Lord’s Army bible activity

- The girls loved this Bible activity! We made army hats from newspaper, then had lots of fun painting them.

- While we worked on the I’m in the Lord’s Army Bible Activity, we talked about what it means to be in the Lord’s army. I reminded the girls that fighting for the Lord means trusting him even when we get scared.

My Flame Burns for God Bible craft

Gideon was just an ordinary man, but he did not let this stop him from doing something great with God’s help.

- We made the "My Flame Burns for God" Bible craft to be a reminder that God uses ordinary people to do great things.

- This Bible craft for preschoolers can be made by cutting a triangle out of cardstock or construction paper as the base of the torch. Then cut yellow, orange and red construction paper into 2”-3” squares.

- Next, glue the colored squares (representing the flames) to the top of the torch. (We used the “My Flame Burns for God" Bible craft found in the Bible Time Family Fun Pack.)

The Sword of the Lord Bible craft Activity

God used an ordinary man to do something extraordinary. With just a trumpet, torch and a jar, the Israelites were able to defeat a huge army with only 300 men.

- We used The Sword of the Lord Bible Craft Activity to show the girls how Gideon’s army defeated their enemy.

We reminded that our daughters that God can can use ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Ready, Set, Go Bible game

Gideon gave God’s instructions to the Israelite army as to how to win the war. Because the Israelites followed the instructions, they won a battle that should have been impossible.

We explained that we need to be ready to do what God tells us to do.

- This Gideon's army Bible game tests your child’s ability to follow instructions. Here is an example: you direct,

“When I say, ‘Go,’ jump three times — ready, set, go!”

You can make the instructions as easy or as difficult as the child’s ability to perform them. You can also add tricks by saying, “Ready, set, ready.”

- After the fun game, we reminded the girls that following God’s instructions is the best thing to do.

God’s Victory Bible Skit Activity

With God’s help, Gideon led the Israelites to a miraculous victory.

In this children's Bible activity, we performed a skit where I played Gideon, and I led the girls (the Israelites) through the amazing victory led by God.

- We had 3 Gideon's army prop cutouts – a trumpet, jar and a torch. (We used the “God’s Victory Bible Skit Activity” found in the Bible Time Family Fun Pack.)

- I glued the torch to the back of the jar and went through the following skit:

“Follow me down the hill to the Midianite camp” (Tiptoe.)

“Shhh—quietly sneak up on the soldiers.”

“When I say, ‘Now,’ throw your down your jars and blow your trumpets. Now!”

“This so scared and confused the Midianite soldiers that they began fighting one another and ran away!”

“We won the battle!” (Jump up and down and shout, “Hooray!”)

“Let’s praise God for the great victory!” (Sing a song.)

After we finished the Gideon's army Bible skit, we reminded the girls that to win our battles we must fight on God’s side.

Blazing Torches bible game

The story of Gideon was a story of faith and God’s amazing power at work.

We played the Blazing Torches Bible Game, to see how well the girls remembered the story of Gideon’s army.

- We reminded the girls that we must trust God in every battle we face.
